Gone, Baby, Gone…

Well, sports fans, it looks like it’s over.  From Wednesday’s GSP.ro:

Conducere Stelei i-a rezervat ieri biletele de avion, iar sîmbătă seara, Toja va fi prezent în Ghencea ca jucător al vicecampioanei…

which means [Brace yourselves...]

The leadership of Steaua has reserved [Tuesday] plane tickets, and on Saturday evening, Toja will be present in Ghencea as a player of the [Romanian] vice-champions.

More?

Toja a plecat ieri din Dallas cu destinaţia Toronto, unde mîine va evolua în meciul Major League Soccer Game, meci care va opune lui West Ham United o echipă formată din cei mai buni fotbalişti din campionatul Statelor Unite ale Americii

which means:

Toja left yesterday from Dallas for Toronto, where he will perform in the MLS All-Star Game, a match in West Ham Unite will play a team formed from the best footballers from the U.S.A.’s Championship.

Still more?  Come on, now here’s the good part:  the Euros that we get for him.  [I've already posted my Toja wig on ebay.ro!  New iPhone, here I come!]

750 de mii de dolari este suma pe care Steaua o va achita pentru transferul lui Toja în Ghencea, atît cît au costat şi Thereau, şi Carlos, aduşi în 2006

Come, now, you must be able to translate!  I don’t even speak Romanian, and I’m doing okay…

$750K is the sum which Steaua is going to pay for the Toja’s transfer to [Steaua], the same amount that Thereau and Carlos cost in 2006.

That’s it.  I guess.  All there’s left to say is:

    I have mixed feelings…

For $750 you basically break even.

For $1.5 I am all for it…given the $ is already planned for something else.

    :(

Well, thank you for the update! I’m definitely sorry to see him go!

    Best of luck, Juan.

The end of an era.. Oh well.. Glad I got to see those hook slides.

I agree that 750k is not a good deal though. I think he is worth more.

Well this makes me kinda sad but I wish Juan the best of luck in Europe. He deserves it:)

I’m a radio dj in Arad (a town in Romania) and i was very amused by this whole story with Toja. It was like a South American soap opera. Anyway, this guy made his worse mistake of his life. Going to Steaua, in Romania is clearly a stupid decision. If he doesn’t perfform well in the first 3 matches so the manager and the owner get very impressed he will stay on the bench the whole season. (this is a copy-cat for the Elton transfer) Steaua isn’t what it used to be in the 80’s and the 90’s (they won Champions LEague in 86).

TOJA, you just ended your career early.

soso-arad: “his worse mistake of his life” :)) you are funny, I think you watch soccer once a year… And isn’t clear that if a soccer player doesn’s perform well he should stay on the bench, and other better should replace him?

  10. By Stelista` on Jul 23, 2008

    I`m from Romania too…and i think that soso-arad didn`t know what he said…

The Steaua`s fans are waiting for Toja and he can be a very loved and good player here…

just fyi… I think the $750K is Euros meaning, roughly $1.3M USD. Of course, this is just educated guessing on my part.

  12. By walterb on Jul 23, 2008

I’ve seen the $ broken down both ways in media reports - dollars and euros. If this is true let’s hope for euros!

  13. By Nathan on Jul 23, 2008

Yes, pray for Euros.. unlike certain other currencies, it keeps going up in value. By the time the check is cut it will be worth $2M.

  14. By stevetoro on Jul 23, 2008

Yeah, it’s weird — the Romanian articles say 750 thousand dollars explicitly.

Congratulations. Please take very good care of Juan. Make big welcome signs and cheer for him. You are very lucky!

    Querido Juan,

I watch and comment sport events, not only football (soccer0 and i know very well what i said. Toja’s career is in danger by moving to Steaua. The Romanian club had many other players that came in with the same buzz and after they didn’t play like the owner expected they were forgotten. (g.e.: Zaharia, Stancu, Ionescu, Neaga, Ochirosii, Pepe Moreno, Elton and others).

  20. By Steaua on Jul 24, 2008

@soso-arad don’t be so angry that uta arad is now in second league :)) Neaga and Ochirosii play for Steaua now, and Zaharia, Stancu, Ionescu, Pepe Moreno and Elton there aren’t good for Steaua.

    Esti un frustrat bai zdreanta.

    @ For the Americans

I am apologise, guys, for some stupid remarks of the Romanians! I respect United States as a country and I wish welcome to Toja! The transfeer fee was around 2 mil of dollars, 1.5 mil of euros …
