Live Blog: FCD @ Chivas (25 April 09)

Posted by stevetoro On April - 25 - 2009

Greetings, sports fans.  It’s your friendly neighborhood Los Toros live blogger, coming at you from SteveToro central, here in Richardson.  No, it’s not the HDC, where Wally-B is tonight (that is, if he can overcome his Hash House a Go-Go hangover).  We’ll try to keep it real.

More after the jump…

T-minus 10 minutes: Hoops that didn’t make the trip:  Wally, Lambo, Purdy, and Shea. I saw Brek’s MLS debut at the HDC 1 year ago today in a FCD win over the Goats.   (He got a card in < 5 minutes.  And hasn’t played much since.  When was the last time you saw minutes from the ‘Hawk?)

T-minus 5 minutes: Updated Los-Toros Defender Readiness Ratings:

  1. Drew Moor (oh, what a good-looking man…)
  2. Blake Wagner
  3. Marcelinho
  4. Danny Torres (meh)
  5. Dello-Russo (tiny)
  6. John (out)
  7. Wallace (Frisco)
  8. Purdy (out)

T-minus 3-minutes: Will we see “Tom” tonight? (When can we drop the “scare”-quotes for Tommy?  How much more sleepwalking will we have to endure from the Andre Rocha?

T-minus 1-minute: Bad news:  Fox Sports SW is stuck on baseball.  Good news:  2 outs, Milwaukee leads Houston in the bottom of the 9th, with tying run on second.  Will we see extra innings?  (Strange feeling:  first time in my life I’ve ever rooted for Milwaukee…)

T-minus 0-minutes: Milwaukee SS boots a throw to 1st.  Houston ties up the game.  Dammit.

1:00: Rooting for Houston to win it right here.

3:00: FCD: Dario Sala, Marcelo Saragosa, Drew Moor, Daniel Torres, Blake Wagner, Andre Rocha, Pablo Ricchetti, Dax McCarty, Dave van den Bergh, David Ferreira, Kenny Cooper.  (from WorldCupWay)  Danny as CB.  (Yikes.)  Sala in goal.  (Woo.)

4:00: I love baseball, but man, this stinks.  Astros just sent up an AAA hitter in a key situation.  He’s batting 1.000, but he’s just whiffed on two crap pitches.  (Yes, I’m bilingual:  I’m qualified to criticize in at least two different sports…)  Switching over to the pxp feed on FCDallas.(net|com).)

8:00: We’re in extra innings.  Dammit.  We’ll be hard-pressed to see any 1st half action tonight.

13:00: Signed up for the MLS Video Service.  Charged me twice.  Now says that the service is “temporarily down for upgrades”.  Wonderful.

We are currently upgrading MLSLIVE.tv and MLSnet.com MatchDay Audio. The service you requested will be back online shortly. We apologize for any inconvenience.

17:00 (?): Finally watching video on-line.  No commentary.  Or clock.

18:00: Beautiful, assertive header off Cooper fro m a Dax cross.  Nice stuff.

19:00: The give-and-go is great if the “go” portion doesn’t immediately give the ball away.  Just sayin’…  Also:  floppin after interacting with Andre Rocha should definitely be called for FC Dallas.  Rocha isn’t going hard into any tackles this year.

21:00: Looks like a Dallas-sized crowd for the Goats.  Also:  Pablo sans mustache…  And while I’m on superficial topics:  I hate midfield ping-pong, Dallas’s blue stripes, and the complete and utter lack of possession.  Oh, and Dario sporting the wicked goat…

25:00:  Torres’s glove must make him off-balanced.  He’s yet to complete a pass — even in slow-mo, FCD bat-the-ball around possession.  What a hardship that glove must be in SoCal — being so close to Neverland Ranch and all…

27:00: Chivas is definitely sticking with their strategy to beat FCD’s CBs over-the-top.  3 balls so far in the last 5 minutes.

28:00: Ferreira with the 35 yd field goal.  Why does FCD seem allergic to touching the ball in the box?  Must all our shots be from > 18 yds out?

30:00: Heckuva cross by Ferreira, nice finish by Dax&Cooper.  Thornton with an inspired shot.  Credit to Chivas for playing up the foul.

31:00: Another red for Dario?  (For playing the ball with his hands outside of the box.) Shades of 4 weeks ago!  Somebody better tell El Viejo where the 18-yard box line is.  In other news:  Ray Burse (JUNIOR)! Sad thing is, I can’t tell who went off for the card…  will try to keep you apprised.  Oh, wait, it’s Dax?   Yup, Dax for Burse.  Sala escorted to the locker room.  Why, oh why, Schellas?  Dax?  Dax was the only offensive touch you had!

BTW, why not play a 3-4-3?  You’ve got 3 decent forwards (JC, KC, and El Matador), 4 decent midfielders (Dax, Rocha, Pablo, and vdb), and 3 decent backs (Moor, John, and someone else).  You don’t have 4 backs.  Hell, even a 3-5-2 would be great.  (Drop El Matador into the midfield, or bring on Bruninho…)

34:00: Chaos on the restart.  Thank goodness Chivas has no idea that the goal isn’t 25 ft high.

38:00:  Thornton with another nice save.

39:00:  Cooper loses it into a double-team.  Yo, Big Man:  dribble through or out.  Just don’t sit there with it! Oh, and Chijindu is a 5-head who just got a card.  (Yes, I’m going on clock time, not game-clock time.  Will hopefully sync up in the 2nd half when I actually have a clock…)

42:00: Dangerous free kick from Chivas.  We’re not marking up well.  Chivas isn’t finishing anywhere near to close.

43:00:  Marcelinho bustin’ out with the black do-rag.   Looks like a WWI head-wound patient out there.   Angling for this year’s wig night?

45:00:  Why does it seem like every FCD ball > 10 yds ends up on the foot fo a Chivas player?

47:00: Desperate lack of closing speed for FCD:  Blake, Moor, and Rocha, just got taken on the straight run by Chivas players.  Good recovery by all three to be there for the rebounds, though…  Thankfully, there were rebounds…

50:00:  Kenny, if you want to be Cristiano Ronaldo, you’ve gotta be Cristiano Ronaldo.  Beat someone on the dribble, make a cross, just don’t back pass out of every double team.  I believe in you, but it’s not working…

52:00: Thank God for offsides.  Chivas is running a clinic out there in possession.  Long cross into the box, excellent finish — called back on a close off-sides call.

54:00: End of 1st half.  Chivas dominated possession, but FCD showed good counter-attacking instincts.  Too little thought shown by the good guys:  we’re ping-ponging the ball around, little care given to long passes.  Work rate is excellent from Ferreira and Cooper.  Rocha still seems to be mailing it in — too many half-hearted challenges and little tracking back.  Losing Dax (on Sala’s red) will hurt, as he looked active and on-target tonight.  Fatigue’s gonna be a factor, as Drew, Marcelinho, Wagner, and Torres will continue to be tested over the top (and all 4 have been burned multiple times this half).  Looking forward to a TV feed soon!

59:00: Astros lose in 11 to the Brewers.

63:00: Looking at halftime highlights.  Mentions by Dave/Bobby:

  • Dax McCarty |||||
  • Cooper |
  • Zack Thornton |||||||
  • Ferreira |
  • Sala | (negative)

Why, again, did we sub-out Dax?

67:00: Bobby likes the adjective “good”.

“We’ve been on a good run here with good attacking options, which were met with some good saves by Zack Thornton… KC is on a good run now, especially after they didn’t look so good so good against Chicago, which is a good team”.

And we now switch from clock time to game time…

45:00: And we’re off…

46:00: Chijindu looks like he’s got Drew Moor’s number.  When he touches the ball, Drew’s legs look like they go double time just to keep up.

48:40: Dallas bodies seem to be flying everywhere off every set piece.  We’re small, but are we *that* small?

49:41: Bobby just said it:  “We’ve gotta be careful in giving too much possession away.  We need to engage…” Yeah, and not just in over-committing, un-intelligent way:  defenders are over-committing on practically every ball.

54:00: Rocha working over Bornstein at the end-line.  There’s life in the old boy yet!

55:30: Burse running over everybody to get the rebound.  (Whew!)

55:41: Terrible touch off the foot of Torres leads to a fab cross/shot by Justin Braun.  Burse with the tip over the bar!

57:00: Galindo getting ready to come in.

57:52: Saragosa gives it away on the cross.  Kljestan finds 5head on the break, Moor takes him out in the box, but no call.

59:00: Galindo in.  Chijindu with another poor finish.

60:01: A YellowTail (When it comes to YellowTail, you win) Yellow Card on Saragosa.  Marcelinho, with the do-rag, you can’t protest your card by waving your arms around.  Act street or don’t act.

61:00: Bench:  Guarda, Avial, Sanchez, Pitch, Cunningham, Marosevic…

62:00: We need more possession.  (Or less interceptions.)  Ricchetti looks great in the middle, but every pass he makes gets lost promptly by its recipient.  (Exception:  Ferreira, who is too-much pass-first, dribble-second for this team, but who looks great.)

63:21: Nice shot from El Matador.  Corner on its way.

64:05: Alecko Eskandarian in for Sascha.  Ricchetti just got a ‘c’ knocked out of his name by a Chivas player (Galindo’s head vs. Pablo’s head), so we’ll stop for a minute…

67:23:  GOAL CHIVAS (1-0). Pressure finally got to the broken FCD backline.  Trujillo out wide, unmarked, got the ball to Harris (who beat Saragosa 100%).  No pressure on the service.  VdB is screaming at Saragosa.

69:36: Nice bending FK by Rocha.  Right at Thornton.

69:58: We’ve seen 24 minutes of Chivas possession.  And beating the slow FCD backline over the top.  How will you respond, Schellas?  It’s your move.  The 1-1-2-4 ain’t working.

71:31: Nagamura had both hands wrapped around Ferreira’s throat.  Whoa.

72:02: Ricchetti is sporting a headband following the knock vs. Galindo’s shoulder.  Looks like Daniel-san.

73:03: Saragosa has had 5 turnovers in 3 minutes.  Eek.

74:16: The link-up between VdB and El Matdor is exciting.  If one of them can find their finishing touch, we’d have something great.  Oh, and if KC Jr could find a way to beat a double-team…

75:38: Rhino’s convinced that it won’t finish 1-0.  He’s told us 3 times now.

78:00: Hello, Mr. Hyndman?  We’re down by a goal.  We’re down a man.  We’ve played 2 games this week.  Our formation is losing possession, and we don’t have anybody who’s a serious counter-attack vs. Chivas.  Can we have a sub, please?

80:00: Please?

80:45: Ricchetti just missed a 1v1 vs. Thornton.  Went for the goalpost, missed it.  Complete shame.

81:40: Cunningham in for Rocha.  Mayen for 5head.  So, now we’re  running a 2-1-2-4?  Yup.  Interesting to see how far up Ferreira will push.  Okay, Saragosa has pushed up.  Now it’s a 3-3-3.

82:00: Yes, Dave — it could easily be 1-1.  It’s not.

83:45: Ferreira just stole the ball from Thornton, deep.  Slick, but no finish.

86:33: I dislike having Cooper and Cunningham playing wing, and 5′3″ Ferreira in the middle.  Might work in less physical leagues, but this one?  Not so much.

87:19: Ferreira draws more triple teams than any other player in MLS.

89:00: Atiba Harris pulls a Roy Williams on Drew Moor.  That’s the end of his night.  Woot:  10v10!

89:45:  GOAL CHIVAS (2-0). Eskandarian takes a long ball off the restart, beats everyone and their brother.  Pops it past RBJ;  Drew Moor passes up the red, fails to flatten Eskandarian, settles with the weak shoulder tackle.

It’s over folks.  Dave Dir and Bobby say it’s a moral victory, but me, I just see the 5th loss of the young season.

Props:  Zack Thornton, Pablo Ricchetti, Drew Moor

Cards:  Dario Sala, Marcelinho, Sascha, Danny Torres
